The Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to a deal to land Minnesota's D'Angelo Russell, Malik Beasley and Jarred Vanderbilt in a three-team trade also involving the Utah Jazz, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
In the trade, the Timberwolves will receive guards Mike Conley and Nickeil Alexander-Walker and picks, while the Jazz will receive Russell Westbrook, Juan Toscano-Anderson, Damian Jones and a lightly protected 2027 Lakers first-round pick, sources said.
All players involved have been notified about the trade, including Westbrook, according to sources.
Russell, 26, is averaging 17.9 points and 6.2 assists while shooting 46.5 percent from the field, including 39.1 percent from 3-point range.
After a rocky start to the season combined with the loss of Karl-Anthony Towns to a calf strain in late November, Russell helped steady the ship and keep Minnesota in the mix of a competitive race in the middle of the Western Conference.
He's averaging a career-high in field goal percentage, two-point percentage and free throw percentage this season. He's also finishing at an elite rate -- his 65.4% shooting on layups and dunks this season ranks in the top 10 among guards (minimum 125 field goal attempts.)
But with Russell heading into the final year of his deal and the continued emergence of Anthony Edwards, Minnesota decided to move in another direction.
Russell will be heading to his fifth team in eight years; he has yet to complete three seasons on the same team thus far in his NBA career.
Westbrook's tenure in L.A. ends less than two years after the Lakers acquired the former MVP in the hopes of vaulting the franchise back into title contention. However, injuries and a poor on-court fit among Westbrook, LeBron James and Anthony Davis led to the Lakers missing the postseason last year and have them in danger of doing the same this season.
Westbrook, 34, now moves to his fifth team in as many years after a decorated 11-year stint in Oklahoma City that saw him make eight All-NBA teams and win the MVP in 2017.
Westbrook can still fill up the stat sheet in his 15th NBA season; he's one of just six players to have at least four triple-doubles this season. But with his move to the bench this year, Westbrook's overall production has dipped from his career norms -- he's averaging 15.9 points, 6.2 rebounds and 7.5 assists. His 41.7% shooting is in the bottom 10 among players averaging at least 12 field goal attempts this season.
Westbrook is in the final year of the five-year, maximum extension he signed with the Thunder back in 2017. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Lakers find their way off Westbrook only giving up one of the picks

Get some scoring and some height on the perimeter too. Good deal for them

Can't wait to hear the excuses in 3 weeks when the Lakers still have no chemistry and more losses come against mediocre teams.

Minnesota gave up on Russell for the same reasons many others including Lakers themselves earlier in his career gave up on Russell.

A sub-par athlete that doesn't play defense and has a very streaky jumper---though he has been better this year.

You aren't winning anything with a D'Angelo Russell---he is a player that will put up rather large numbers on average/terrible teams. He is very much Westbrook lite minus the athleticism with a somewhat better jumper.

This is just a desperation move by Lakers. A move just to make a move. Not sure what Russell's contract has left on it. But with this and the Riu move i think the Lakers are already out of picture signing Irving this summer.

Not a terrible trade but a team with any direction wouldn't make it....

I think it was more of a move to get rid of Westbrook and his contract

I’m sure this has happened a lot over the years but this has to be the first time a teammate has officially fucked a teammates mom

Malik Beasley and Pippen Jr, I mean pippen Jr prob should try to get dealt if he can. That’s way too rough, I couldn’t handle that

Why? Westbrook is off the books after the season. His contract actually had a small amount of value to Lakers this season.

Utah smashed with that trade. But pretty typical Danny Ainge

It’s a pretty incredible trade when you consider:

-they added shooting and defense, as well as some depth
-they got rid of Westbrook
-they got rid of Jones
-they only gave up one of the picks

Trade for Rui and Russell. Taking them completely out of play for Irving.

This summer when they can't afford Irving. You will have the fat guy on ESPN saying "my sources tell me Irving is considering joining the Lakers for the mid-level"---Then 2 weeks later Irving re-signs with Dallas for max or close to max.

Like with Chris Paul a few years back and the fat guy was reporting this---Paul re-signs with Suns for 40 plus million a year--haha.

The west coast talking heads are always the best unintentional comedians.

I remember when Lebron was demanding Eric Spoelstra be fired.

Always the coach or players or organization. Guy should just be happy luck broke his way to have 4. Should be 2---with one being a bubble, In a season that could have easily been canceled giving him 1.

Riley gave in to some of Lebron's demands. However NOT that one.

Another reason Lebron left to go back to Cleveland. Thats when I started to hate him as he had everything down here and left b/c he couldnt have "his way"
